Dog Chewing Problems
One of the most bothersome problems about young puppies is their tendency to chew on things that were never meant to withstand puppy teeth. Many dog owners arrived home to see their favorite shoes in shreds or their favorite book with missing pages. Puppies go through a period when they need to chew. However, this should not happen more than a few times otherwise the dog will continue chewing personal items until the dog owner tells him otherwise. The best method in teaching your dog not to chew on your personal items is to provide the dog with his own chewing objects; such as bones and rubber toys. Make sure the rubber toys are hard enough to give his teeth some resistance. It is not a good idea to give the dog objects similar to your personal items such as an old shoe! The puppy can not discriminate between the old shoe and your favorite pair.Should you notice the dog starting to chew on objects that are not his chewing toys; a loud noise such as dropping a chain on the floor will distract him and follow up with the firm "no". Avoid giving the dog the impression that you are throwing the chain at him; this will only cause the dog to become fearful. You may have to spend some time waiting around for the dog to start chewing again, but take the time. Be ready to make crashing noises and your verbal command of "No!" For the dog that dislikes being left alone and resorts to chewing after you leave the house you can begin training him by putting him in a room by himself with a few tempting chewable objects. Pop in on him frequently and begin training should he be chewing on the bait objects. This will eventually condition him to your absence.http://www.samsdogtraining.com/dog_obedience_training/dog_chewing.html
